Protein folding in membranes: determining energetics of peptide-bilayer interactions.
Although the problem of the folding of soluble proteins continues to resist solution, we at least have a strong understanding of the general thermodynamic principles1,2 and have available a wealth of thermodynamic data.3-5 The study of membrane protein folding and stability is much less advanced: Some general principles are emerging,6-9 but the amount of thermodynamic data available remains qui...
متن کاملProtein Stability, Folding, Disaggregation and Etiology of Conformational Malfunctions
Estimation of protein stability is important for many reasons: first providing an understanding of the basic thermodynamics of the process of folding, protein engineering, and protein stability plays important role in biotechnology especially in food and protein drug design. Today, proteins are used in many branches, including industrial processes, pharmaceutical industry, and medical fields. A...
متن کاملFolding Transitions of Self-Avoiding Membranes.
Abstract: The phase structure of self-avoiding polymerized membranes is studied by extensive Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations. Several folding transitions from the flat to a collapsed state are found. Using a suitable order parameter and finite size scaling theory, these transitions are shown to be of first order. The phase diagram in the temperature-field plane is given. متن کاملDeployable membranes designed from folding tree leaves.
A simple model of deploying tree leaves is assembled in different arrangements to produce polygonal foldable membranes for use as deployable structures. One family of folding patterns exhibits a small strain mechanism, which is investigated. Variations on the basic arrangements can be used to fold membranes with a discretized curvature.
متن کاملProtein folding in membranes: insights from neutron diffraction studies of a membrane beta-sheet oligomer.
Studies of the assembly of the hexapeptide Acetyl-Trp-Leu(5) (AcWL(5)) into beta-sheets in membranes have provided insights into membrane protein folding. Yet, the exact structure of the oligomer in the lipid bilayer is unknown. Here we use neutron diffraction to study the disposition of the peptides in bilayers. We find that pairs of adjacent deuterium-labeled leucines have no well-defined pea...
